The Painted Words! An Ekphrasis Event
in honor of Susan deWardt
Steamboat Art Museum and Off the Beaten Path invite writers to compose an ekphrasis on one of the paintings in the 27th Annual Exhibition of Oil Painters of America. With 250 exceptional works of art, there is one to move you with a story that must be told! Your essay is limited only by your imagination! Write a piece up to 750 words on a selected piece, submit it for judging, enjoy a wine and awards reception with selected readings by submitting authors.
*Ekphrasis (a word relatively new to dictionaries) is the use of words to comment on a piece of visual art. One of the earliest and most commonly cited forms of ekphrasis occurs in The Iliad, where Homer provides a long and discursive account of the elaborate scenes embossed on the shield of Achilles.

- Judge: Sue Krall and staff, Off The Beaten Path
- Submission deadline: 5:00 p.m , August 6, 2018 Free for members, $5 for non-members
- Please submit in Times New Roman font, 12pt, double spaced.
- Must be submitted with entry form and payment, if applicable.
- Submissions may be made in person at SAM or on line, betse@steamboatartmuseum.org, with payment made on line if not a member.
- If submission and payment is made in person, please also send a digital copy to betse@steamboatartmuseum.org.
- Do not put name on essay for judging purposes, identification will be made on entry form.
- Selected readers will be notified prior to the Awards Reception on August 16, 2018
