Expressive writing provides support for a deeply private writing process proven to reduce stress. This free, effective trauma intervention is lead by veterans.

Val Brainerd is a Navy veteran who holds an MBA from Colorado Technical University, an MS from the Naval Postgraduate School, and a BS from Penn State University. After serving in the Navy for twenty years, she had a follow-on career in the aerospace defense industry. She became a certified yoga instructor in 2016, bringing together her desire to help others, commitment to fitness, and belief in the many benefits of yoga. Val has significant experience with developing and leading training programs, technical writing, and designing and facilitating workshops, meetings and conferences. She teaches a variety of studio and private yoga classes, including slow vinyasa flows designed to allow students to fully connect movement to breath, yin yoga to focus on deeper tissues and find calmness, and restorative yoga to promote relaxation. Val resides in Steamboat Springs, CO, and enjoys skiing, hiking, and camping with her husband and Labrador retriever.

Cindy Skaggs is a military veteran who holds an MFA from Pacific Lutheran University and an MA in Creative Writing from Regis University. She offered Veterans Writing Workshops in 2019-2020 for Colorado Humanities and Mt. Carmel Veteran Services Center in Colorado Springs and statewide online. Her memoir in essays recently won Finalist in the 2020 Monadnock Essay Collection Prize by Bauhan Publishing. She is the author of seven novels of romantic suspense and many journal publications and an advocate for military and veteran issues. Also mom to two humans and a reluctant wrangler of too many critters, she is a native of Colorado where she teaches graduate and undergraduate creative writing.
