The Steamboat Art Museum is pleased to present the 7th annual literary competition “The Painted Words 2024, formerly known as “Ekphrasis,” celebrating the collaboration of the written word and the visual arts. Writers of all ages are challenged to write a story or poem inspired by a painting in the current exhibition at the Steamboat Art Museum – Heide Presse: We Turn our Faces Westward, One Woman’s Journey 1839 – 1848.

The competition challenges writers, adults and youth, to write a story or poem, up to 750 words, inspired by a painting in the current exhibition. The entries are judged by an independent panel including members of Ski Town Media, Steamboat Art Museum, Off the Beaten Path Bookstore and the previous year’s competition winner. The Awards Reception and Readings on Thursday, August 1 at 5:30 at SAM celebrates the creativity of all writers. The evening includes select readings by “Celebrity Readers” prior to the awards presentation. Awards include cash and gift certificates. Awards will be presented in both poetry and prose categories. All submissions are published in The Painted Words 2024 Anthology available at the Steamboat Art Museum.
