Every summer crowds of people gather for some outdoor theatre, the way Shakespeare intended it. This year, lovers of theatre and the outdoors can look forward to the Great American Laughing Stock Company’s Piknik Theatre Festival, featuring William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and an original musical fairy tale comedy, The Bee Man of Orn.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream: “Lysander loves Hermia, and Hermia loves Lysander. Helena loves Demetrius; Demetrius used to love Helena but now loves Hermia. Egeus, Hermia’s father, prefers Demetrius as a suitor, and enlists the aid of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to enforce his wishes upon his daughter. According to Athenian law, Hermia is given four days to choose between Demetrius, life in a nunnery, or a death sentence. Hermia, ever defiant, chooses to escape with Lysander into the surrounding forest. Complications arise in the forest…”-Bardweb.net
The Bee Man of Orn: As this is an original play we can’t divulge too much information quite yet. However, we will tease you with this, the play is based on obscure fairy tales woven into a single narrative and is something I personally don’t want to miss!
Performances take place in various public parks throughout Steamboat Springs, beginning Friday, July 27th. This year members of Dacha Theater ensemble from Seattle, WA will be joining as 2018 company members including Mike Lion, director and founding member, Kate Drummond, and Nathan Whitehouse. Other professional performers include Hannah Dubner, Hunter Ringsmith, Ginny Chesson, and Nick Demarest.
If you haven’t yet been to a Piknik Theatre Festival, come prepared for all kinds of weather because if it doesn’t storm during at least one performance, it’s not a true festival experience. Bring a blanket or a chair, a bottle of wine and some food to make this a true piknik experience. All ages are welcome. For more information visit http://galsco.org/
